The UK has the largest presence of community activity at railway stations in the world

As the rail industry looks to restore confidence and grow patronage, partnerships between the railways and communities will be vital and this model for Community Station Partnerships is being replicated in other areas.

With a renewed emphasis on leisure markets as changed working patterns result in less commuting, localism and domestic tourism is predicted to prosper.

'Community Station Partnerships’ developed during 2021, the year of national crisis and whilst society was constrained by Covid regulations, social distancing and lack of travel opportunities, the West Midlands Rail industry recorded a surge in community spirit and volunteer interest in our stations.

The first Community Station Partnership in the UK was created by volunteers along The Shakespeare Line in Warwickshire.

Community Station Partnerships

The objectives of Community Station Partnerships are:

  • To encourage people to connect with the railways and adopt local railway stations

  • To work with neighbours, friends, local businesses and the Train Operating Company to develop their stations as community assets

  • To help develop ‘reasons to travel’ and increase train usage with local promotions and publicity

  • To bring people together to enhance their neighbourhoods and make new friends

  • To enhance the passenger experience by making the station more welcoming with a sense of localism and community
