Community Stations

Are ‘manned’ by volunteers who help to support the recovery of rail

Are reflective of the local area

Welcoming of passengers

Have enhanced facilities provided by the communities

Have ‘greened up’ environs

Cared for landscapes, planters and natural habitats for local wildlife

Benefit from local entrepreneurial skills

There are currently 55 Community Stations adopted by local volunteers across the West Midlands Railway Network, the volunteers are tireless in their efforts to enhance their local stations and the Handbook is attached here:

The WMR ‘Adopt a Station’ scheme enables individuals or groups to adopt their own local railway station and work with the Train Operating Company in reviving and enhancing the stations.

The scheme brings local character to the platforms and enhances the experience for passengers, stations can become beacons of revival for local communities and the station volunteer efforts greatly help to restore the place of railway stations as central to local life. Friends of a Station come together to plant, paint, create, improve and promote and great friendships can be made with station staff, other volunteers and members of the wider community.

This local energy contributes to improving towns and villages and the community partnerships can be transformational for both economies and societies.

The rewards are evident in commuters and passengers’ responses and the visible upgrades which are uplifting to witness and the community groups help to tackle loneliness by bringing people together with a common purpose.

Community works help lift morale and create physical and mental health benefits.

As a company, West Midlands Railway are committed to getting closer to the communities we serve as this will result in us building a better railway. We are aware that we are merely custodians of much-cherished national community assets, and we want to work with local people to establish ‘community stations’ as reflective of local pride and social prosperity.
